Car PM2.5 Sensors Improve Air Quality; Smoking Causes High PM2.5

Vehicle PM2.5 sensors improve air quality; smoking in the car causes PM2.5 to exceed standards

According to tests by relevant institutions, focusing on the impact of indoor smoking, two sets of experimental results conducted at environment monitoring central stations show that smoking has a serious impact on PM2.5 exceeding the standards.

First, an elevator of about 2 square meters was chosen for the experiment. Upon entering the elevator, staff used a portable particle monitor with a built-in pm2.5 detection module to test. The instantaneous PM2.5 value was 81.3 μg/m³. Less than 10 seconds after lighting a cigarette, the elevator was filled with smoke, and the instrument data rose to 999 μg/m³, an increase of more than 10 times.

In an office of about 20 square meters where no one was smoking, the instantaneous PM2.5 value was 75.2 μg/m³. To test the experimental effect, staff closed the doors and windows while lighting two cigarettes simultaneously. At this time, the PM2.5 value in the office soared to 416.3 μg/m³. Subsequently, doors and windows were opened to exhaust the smoke, and it took about 20 minutes for the PM2.5 value to return to around 75.2 μg/m³.

The experiment shows that PM2.5 is very high even in a 20-square-meter office, let alone in a cramped car space. Smoking one cigarette produces a huge amount of pollutants, which include not only the well-known nicotine and tar but also carbon monoxide and various irritants and carcinogens. Therefore, installing a vehicle PM2.5 sensor in the car is imperative. Currently, many PM2.5 sensors and automotive air quality sensors are installed in car air conditioners or air purifiers. When increased PM2.5 in the air is detected, it will be displayed on the screen or announced via voice, automatically turning on the car air conditioner or air purifier to provide the owner with a comfortable driving environment.
