How to know if indoor VOC values are safe or dangerous?

In modern living environments, to maintain indoor air quality, we typically utilize various tools such as sensors, air quality detectors, and air purifiers to monitor indoor air. These devices display various air values, providing us with a basis for judging air quality.

However, many users are still confused: are the values seen on a VOC sensor safe or dangerous?

To answer this question, we first need to know what the safety standards for VOCs are in China and from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Chinese Standard: China's "Indoor Air Quality Standard" (GB/T 18883-2002) stipulates that the concentration of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) in indoor air should be lower than 0.6 mg/m³. This means any VOC concentration higher than this standard may pose a threat to the health of residents.

World Health Organization (WHO) Standard: WHO standards for VOCs tend to set limits for specific substances. For example, the WHO recommends that the concentration of formaldehyde in indoor air should not exceed 0.1 mg/m³.

Once we understand the standards, we can compare the values displayed on the VOC sensor. If the value is lower than the standard limit, it can be considered safe. If the value is higher than the standard, we need to take action immediately. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of VOCs can cause headaches, eye and respiratory tract irritation, skin problems, and may even lead to serious nervous system and organ damage.

In response, we can take the following measures to lower indoor VOC values:

● Improve ventilation: Regularly open windows for ventilation to enhance indoor air circulation.

● Use air purifiers: Choose air purifiers capable of filtering VOCs to remove harmful substances from the air.

● Choose low-VOC products: Purchase decoration materials and furniture that have low VOC emissions.

● Regular inspections: Periodically check and maintain household equipment and ventilation systems to ensure they are in good condition.

Understanding and monitoring indoor VOC levels is key to maintaining a healthy living environment. By comparing the VOC concentration displayed by the sensor with national and international standards, we can judge the safety of the air quality. It is crucial to take action immediately once VOC levels are found to exceed the standard. Through these methods, we can not only ensure the safety of indoor air quality but also provide a healthier and more comfortable living environment for ourselves and our families.
